I got out of town for the weekend and joined a few friends on our annual White Rim bike trip.
The ride is on an approximately 100 mile dirt road that was built to enable uranium exploration in the canyons surrounding the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers. The region is now part of Canyonlands National Park within the Island in the Sky district and one of the few places within the National Park system where off-road biking is allowed.
The ride starts at about 6000' at the Island in the Sky visitor's center and drops down the South Fork of Shafer Canyon (pictured here) to about 4500' where it meets the White Rim which is a thick layer of hard white sandstone. The softer layers of rock both above and below the 'Rim' have washed away to reveal a white bench of slickrock. The bench runs south, following the Colorado river, and then north, following the Green River, and surrounds the Island in the Sky on three sides.
The La Sal mountains can be seen in the distance.
